DOT Drug & Alcohol Consortium

At Sovereign Testing Solutions, we are committed to maintaining the highest regulatory compliance standards for your employees and the general public. Our US DOT Drug and Alcohol Consortium is designed to help organizations meet the regulatory requirements set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Federal Rail Road Association (FRA), as well as the Department of Transportation (US DOT) itself.

DOT drug testing rules govern the type of tests drivers take and how often tests are administered, the facilities that are approved to perform DOT-approved drug tests, and the components of an organization’s Drug-Free Workplace program.

DOT-REQUIRED DRUG TESTING

Pre Employment Drug Testing

Before operating a vehicle that requires a Commercial Driver's License, all owner-operators or employees must complete a pre-employment drug test and return negative results.

Post-Accident

Depending on the type of accident and the injuries sustained by those involved, drivers may be asked to take an immediate drug and alcohol tests to determine individual liability.

Random Drug Testing

To remain DOT compliant, both owner operators and employees of transportation companies must join a consortium pool and submit for random drug tests throughout the year.

Reasonable Suspicion

If an employer has reason to suspect an employee may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the workplace, the employee in question may be asked to take a drug or alcohol test.

Follow Up

Drivers who have successfully completed the return-to duty process (including a negative return-to-duty test) must be tested several times over the following year.

Return-To-Duty

If a driver has previously tested positive for drugs or alcohol, he or she must first return a negative result on a "return-to-duty" drug test before resuming workplace responsibilities.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TEST?

Whether test results are positive or negative, Sovereign Testing Solutions follows HIPAA guidelines to ensure client information is handled with the strictest privacy and confidentiality.

If tests return a positive result, our certified Medical Review Officer (MRO) will contact the employee to determine if any medical reasons may have affected the test, such as taking prescription medication.  If no acceptable reason is found, the employee should be removed from performing safety-sensitive duties and management should consult the STS Drug and Alcohol Policy program policy to determine the next steps.
